Fellowship qualifications

Review the requirements and qualifications needed to join our data science fellowship program.

The fellowship is designed for candidates with a Master’s degree in data science, statistics, medical or health informatics, or a related field. Graduate course work, project work, or substantial experience in healthcare data or a technical field is highly desired. No previous work experience is required.

You must demonstrate strong proficiency with database design involving SQL and programming languages such as Python, R, or SAS. We require proficiency in quantitative skills, including statistical inference, machine learning applications, and model development. Experience with Electronic Health Records (EHR/EMR) data is preferred.

Applications require a resume and a one-page personal statement. Candidates who advance to first-round interviews are also required to submit a project portfolio that demonstrates analytical and technical capabilities.

Preceptor: Dr. David Levine, MD

Chief Medical Officer, Data and Digital, David leads Vizient’s data and digital strategy and partners with health system executives nationwide to advance healthcare through analytics, performance improvement, and AI. With over 20 years of clinical experience in emergency medicine and extensive leadership in healthcare analytics, David serves as a subject matter expert for a council of chief medica and quality officers for academic medical centers.

Mentor: Eric Hixson, PhD, MBA

Vice President, Data Science & Methodology, Eric and his team work across the entire domain of Vizient's Data Science division, updating and maintaining core data tools and pipelines essential to the products and services Vizient offers to its providers and members. He works with directors of data engineering, MLOps, clinical informatics, and product strategy to ensure the tools developed by his team add value to Vizient's current product portfolio. Eric reports up to and frequently works with Dr. David Levine.

Meet the 2026 – 2027 Data Science Fellows

Santosh Nachimuthu

Santosh Nachimuthu, MS

Santosh received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering with a Minor in Computing and Intelligence as well as a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Georgia Tech. He has previous internship and research experience across both industry and academia. His work has ranged from tool creation and medical device analysis for Clinical Research teams at Medtronic to brain imaging research at Emory University’s MIND Lab to the development of an improved ML-based ECG analysis pipeline set up for FDA approval. These experiences developed his skills and interest in biomedical data analysis, aligning with Vizient’s mission of improving provider performance to deliver quality care for patients.

Nicholas Jeschke

Nicholas Jeschke, MS

Nicholas received a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in biostatistics and data science from Washington University in St. Louis. During graduate school, he worked in Dr. Yin Cao’s lab where he studied risk factors for early-onset colon and rectal cancers and collaborated on research with Dr. Andrew Atkinson on the use of large-language models to detect catheter-associated UTIs. These experiences developed his skills in working with clinical data and applying AI/ML to healthcare challenges. Nicholas is passionate about leveraging clinical data to improve health outcomes and is committed to advancing Vizient’s mission of improving healthcare performance for providers and the patients they serve.
